New Favorite UWS Neighborhood Restaurant

My new favorite neighborhood restaurant is Bello Sguardo on Amsterdam just north of 79th Street. They call themselves Mediterranean and they mean that literally. There are Turkish, Morrocan and Italian dishes on the menu. The appetizers are generally Turkish-style mezze and the dishes run the gamut.

Start off with the Patlican Salad - a delicious smoked eggplant puree with triangles of toasted pita and don't miss the lovely and piqant shrimp appetizer. The main courses I've had so far are the Moroccan chicken with preserved lemon and the pasta with broccoli rabe, white beans and merguez sausage. Both of them are excellent.

For dessert, the Turkish-style almond pudding is quite literally a "milk pudding" (as these are often called on other menus), hardly sweet at all and quite soothing - best for the true pudding fanatic who likes a range of pudding experiences. The Turkish pistachio gelato is quite flavorful on the other hand and very good indeed for pretty much anyone.
